The problem
It's the app I want to use.
It's meant for Spanish speakers who want to go to China or understand its culture.
Outside work, I like travelling and I'm interested in China. So the first user is me.
What I did
Product and development. It's a personal project.
The decision that defines it: bringing travel, culture and language together in one place.
The other one is technical: website and mobile app in the same monorepo.
How it works
Four pieces. It's under construction: this is how it's designed, not what already works.
Plan the trip with AI: a day-by-day itinerary, flights and hotels, and a practical toolkit. The AI works with in-depth knowledge of China and with Chinese national sources.
Culture and tips: what's worth knowing about China for the trip.
Learn Chinese: built around pinyin, Chinese written with the Latin alphabet.
Website and app in a monorepo: Next.js for the website, React Native with Expo for mobile, and Supabase for the data.
Outcome
There's no result to share yet.
What I've learnt so far: building the app you'd use yourself is an honest way to start.
You don't have to invent your user. You know what's missing because you miss it yourself.
There's a catch, though: one user isn't a market.
We'll see where it goes.
